Building Update

Due to the growing need for school places in Three Rivers, the school was asked to expand from September 2016 by 30 students in Year 7 each year until September 2020.

The school secured funding of £7 million to complete 4 phases of building works to ensure that the site would be able to house the additional students, in so doing, future proofing the school with state of the art provision.

In May 2016, the first phase began which involved the superb art and maths block as well as an extension to the existing Carey Sixth Form Building giving more study and café space. We reported on the building works here. Students began lessons in this new building in April 2017. The annual Art Show was also housed in the spectacular new art facility, the Hadfield Art Centre.

Improvements were also carried out to the highway outside the main entrance, with a pedestrian crossing which has led to students being able to safely cross the busy A404. The bus lanes have also been extended to allow more space for anticipated additional bus journeys to school. Additional parking spaces have been created on the school site and a new car exit has been created, making entry and exit to the school site safer for vehicles.

The second phase of the project was started in May 2017 and completed in August in time for the start of term. This phase involved the refurbishment of the old maths block which now houses our sister school Croxley Danes. From September 2018, when Croxley Danes moves to its new site, this building will be become extra teaching space for St Clement Danes. Along with this refurbishment, the existing small computer teaching spaces have been made into a cavernous computing lab.

The third phase is currently being constructed. This part of the expansion project is a two storey building. When complete, it will house new PE changing rooms, a teaching space for drama and a fitness suite. The building is due for completion by January 2018.

The final phase is to modify the vacated art teaching area in the centre of the school. The plans include an additional science lab, improved technology teaching spaces and a large open space to facilitate easier student movement through the school. This part of the project will start in the summer term of 2018 and be completed by December 2018.

We are delighted that such extensive improvements to the site have been made possible by the funding secured for both St Clement Danes’ own expansion and the refurbishment to accommodate Croxley Danes. We are indebted to both Dr Johnson and Mr Heward who have overseen these projects. Long into the future, St Clement Danes students will benefit from this period of building which is surely creating one of the most impressive school sites in the area.
