Junior Mathematicians excel at Junior Maths Challenge

Congratulations to our Junior Maths Challenge team who performed brilliantly at the Regional Final, held on Wednesday 27th February at Ashlyns School. This event saw twenty-four schools from across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Middlesex compete for a place in the National Final.

The St Clement Danes team consisted of Year 8 students Freddy and James, and Year 9 students Alistair and Michael. The boys successfully navigated their way through four rounds of intense problem solving and advanced mathematical challenges.

First up was the group round where the team could work together to solve ten questions of varying content and difficulty against the clock. This was followed by the Crossnumber which saw the boys split and work in pairs. One pair had the ‘across’ clues and the other pair had the ‘down’ clues. These were solved using logic and deduction to complete a crossword-style grid of numerical answers. Round three was the Shuttle: the boys again worked in pairs, this time trying to complete a series of four questions whose answers all rely on the previous solution being correct. Finally, the boys took on the Relay which is a race against time (literally!) to answer as many questions as possible whilst running around the room to check the answers and provide the team with the next question.

The four boys placed fourth in the event which is our highest ever result! Well done to the team and also to Chesham Grammar School, Dragon Independent School and Watford Grammar School for Boys who finished first, second and third respectively.
