Diversity and Inclusion Society Assembly
In early December the Diversity and Inclusion Society presented an interesting assembly on how consent is portrayed in the media.
Music and TV shows have long been influential in shaping our culture and social norms, however, this often means the depiction of consent is incorrect. Often, music, films and TV shows do not show consent in the correct way, which can influence us all in different ways which can have damaging effects on young impressionable children when it comes to topics such as safe and consensual sex as well as many other issues.
The assembly discussed how, whilst we cannot change these harmful messages often presented within the media, the first step to creating positive change is noticing these behaviours and talking about them.
Ultimately more conversations need to be had about consent, as the more confident people will feel to be able to call others out about unacceptable remarks or actions.
